Less than two months after moving to our new home at Webfaction and activating Akismet on the blog (previously I used Spam Karma), Akismet today reports that it has caught an astonishing 1000 comment spams. Considering this count starts on March 19th, and that the blog has very little traffic, this is quite astonishing, isn’t it? According to Google Analytics, I haven’t even had that same number of pageviews ever since I started tracking the blog… Where will this end? And I wonder what it’s like for the very large blogs, how much spam they must surely get. Any of you A-listers reading care to comment ?

[UPDATE] Problogger’s Darren Rowse replied through Twitter, and it’s ridiculous: he’s had 3,911,810 comments blocked so far in one of his blogs!

Well, it’s been a loooong time without posting… What with one thing and another, it’s been impossible to spare some time to blog, in particular with the model I had been following. Software reviews are fun to write, but they take a long time to do. Download, install, test, test some more, and then look for the best way to present your findings. Apart from that, while I was reviewing software that is mostly related to what I do for a living (I am currently working in a project to deploy Rational Portfolio Manager, a project/portfolio management tool from IBM, at a software development company), testing and installing all those tools was becoming too heavy for me. I breathe project management tools every hour of the day at work, so I think I need my blog to be a space where I can take a break from the “serious” stuff and relax.

All this means that the blog will be heading in a new direction now. I don’t know yet exactly what will happen, but probably I will try to be more relaxed about what I post about for some time, and then we’ll see if things start naturally heading towards a particular direction. If this direction doesn’t show up, well, then I will just keep the blog as a place to keep random thoughts and ideas.

I would like to thank those who have kept their subscriptions to my RSS feed through these long silences, and ask you to maybe hang around for a little while – who knows, maybe the blog will improve over time?

Someone has been reading my posts on Mind-Mapping tools! I have recently been contacted by the folks over at Comapping telling me about some new stuff they have released over there, and giving me access to a test account. I will check this out over the next few days and will post a review of the new features. Also, the people at Concept Draw have offered me a free license of their Mind Mapping product. Even though I had previously stated that my reviews would cover only software that can be used in some form for free, this is a nice opportunity for me to take a look at a commercial competitor to the free offerings previously reviewed. So hopefully by Sunday there will be some stuff here about Concept Draw as well. Stay tuned!

I haven’t been able to post anything for quite a while, but trust me, it’s for a good reason… I don’t want to get into too many details here, but I’ve managed to get a very nice contract, 24 months, for the largest deployment of a certain project management tool in Latin America. I can’t tell details right now, because there are a couple of contractual non-disclosure clauses until the whole thing gets rolling, but for now I’ve been away from home and very busy for the last week or so. Please wait for me, I’ll be back with news some time soon.

I though I’d start the week with a little thank-you post… I have recently taken part in Problogger’s Group Writing Project, and the feedback has been enormous. Lots and lots of pingbacks, lots and lots of new readers, plus a lot of new very interesting blogs I have discovered (and added to my feed reader). Instead of publishing the entire list of participants (800+ blogs), I think it’s nicer to publish some of those which are somehow related to my blog:

Basil Vandegriend: Professional Software Development – thanks for the comment, great blog too!

Shawn.org

Chasing a dream – nice blog, fits right in with what I’m doing at the moment, and thanks for mentioning me

RodTempleton.net

Adventures in Copywriting – very nice post

And a special mention should be given to Kim Roach’s The Optimized Life, which has an excellent list of 50 GTD apps. Thanks Kim for the comment and pingback, I’m getting lots of visitors coming from you Also, I’d like to say thatthese are not the only entries that are worth checking out, there are a lot of good ones which I haven’t mentioned. Check out the full list at Problogger and enjoy, it will keep you busy for quite some time.

All of these are already in my feed reader, and some will be added to my blog roll shortly. This is the best part of participating in this kind of project, you get to meet great bloggers which you might miss in the mass confusion that is the internet. Plus, if you’re into this kind of thing, it doesn’t harm your stats either – my Technorati ranking has jumped from around 2 million to around <strike>160k</strike> <strike>140k</strike> 122k! And, last but not least, a big thank you to Problogger’s Darren Rowse for hosting this great online event…
